Other Active Ingredients Worth Knowing

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is derived from grain. It's anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and inhibits melanin synthesis. It's particularly effective for rosacea, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and mild to moderate acne. Prescription concentrations go up to twenty percent, with OTC formulations typically at ten percent or below.

It's one of the safest actives for sensitive skin, largely because it has a self-regulating effect: it preferentially targets overactive melanocytes and bacteria without broadly disrupting skin function the way stronger exfoliants can.

Kojic Acid

Tranexamic Acid

You don't need to wait long between layers. Thirty seconds is enough for most products. The goal is to let one product settle before adding the next, not to let it fully absorb into deeper skin layers. Most active serums take a few hours to fully absorb regardless of what goes on top.

The exception is retinol, especially if you're using it on dry skin (which minimizes irritation). Apply it directly after drying off from cleansing, wait two to five minutes, then proceed.


AM Versus PM: Splitting Your Active Ingredients by Time of Day

Use it where it counts: before your sunscreen in the morning.

Low-concentration AHAs like lactic acid at five percent can be used in the morning, though with strict SPF compliance. Most people find it easier to use stronger chemical exfoliants at night when there's no sun exposure.

SPF must close every morning routine. Not because of cosmetic preference but because many actives, especially retinol and AHAs, increase photosensitivity. Going outside after retinol without SPF is counterproductive. You're accelerating the same kind of damage the retinol is helping you reverse.

Evening Actives

Peptides work in either timeframe. They're stable, non-photosensitizing, and have no meaningful reason to favor one time of day.

Benzoyl peroxide can be used at night to avoid any daylight degradation risk.


Skin Cycling: A Smarter Framework for Active Ingredients

Skin cycling is a four-night rotation system for active ingredients popularized by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe and subsequently endorsed by a wide range of dermatological professionals. The premise is simple: alternate active ingredient nights with recovery nights to get results without chronically stressing the skin barrier.

The four-night cycle:
